About the Debate
The Career Town Debate Challenge helps students research career-themed topics, form arguments, and present them persuasively. Judges will assess reasoning, evidence, teamwork and delivery β all skills vital to future careers.
Objectives
- Improve public speaking & research skills
- Encourage critical thinking on career choices
- Build confidence to present ideas clearly
Format & Speaking Order
Suggested format (adaptable):
- Prelims: Short motions, 2 speakers per team (6β8 min rounds)
- Semi-finals: Extended motions, 3 speakers per team
- Finals: Top teams debate on a policy/career-impact motion with rebuttals
Speaking Order & Time Limits
- 1st Speaker β 4 minutes (constructive)
- 2nd Speaker β 4 minutes (rebuttal & extension)
- 3rd Speaker (if used) β 3 minutes (summary)
- Reply/Closure β 2 minutes
Judging Criteria
- Content (40%) β relevance, evidence, logic
- Style (30%) β clarity, rhetoric, delivery
- Strategy (20%) β rebuttal, team coordination
- Time & Decorum (10%) β adherence to limits & decorum
Panel decisions are final.
Official Rules
- No personal attacks β arguments must focus on ideas and evidence.
- Speakers must stick to time limits; penalties apply for overruns.
- Only team members are allowed to speak; no audience intervention.
- Use of offensive language will lead to disqualification.
- Judgesβ rulings on points of order and adjudication are final.
Event Timeline
Registration: Open until the announced deadline.
Prelim Rounds: Local / in-school rounds to shortlist teams.
Final Round: Live debate with judges and audience.
Awards & Recognition
Top teams receive trophies and certificates. Individual speaker awards may be given for Best Speaker, Best Rebuttal and Best Research.
